I often hear Studer Group coach Barbara Hotko (author of "Rounding for Outcomes") describe the Healthcare Flywheel^SM as similar to how the flywheel on a steam engine drives a train. She says, "When you listen to the sound of the engine, you can hear the push that starts the engine. Then as the engine moves, the train gains momentum, until the momentum is so great, it's difficult to stop. Some say it takes eight miles for a locomotive to stop."

It is the same with the Healthcare Flywheel^SM. When organizations help employees re-connect to their values and passion for doing worthwhile work, they balance the flywheel and inspire them to commit to some very prescriptive To-Do's (see Studer Group's Must-Haves^SM) that turn the flywheel. This creates results that generate increasing momentum for more results on the journey to service and operational excellence.…until they are "hardwired." In other words, an organization can sustain the gains, even if great leaders come and go.

Each issue will share in-depth information on key topics (this quarter—how to reduce employee turnover and increase loyalty), include case studies, and offer free downloadable tools that will help to hardwire results (people, service, quality, finance, and growth) at your organization.
