ABOUT US

Alamance Regional Medical Center is a 238 bed not-for-profit hospital and health care system located in Burlington, the heart of North Carolina. Our mission is simple: to improve the health of the citizens of Alamance County and the surrounding areas. It’s something we strive to meet daily through a full service healthcare system across a broad spectrum of services.

With more than 2,000 employees, Alamance Regional is the third largest employer in Alamance County. We offer a full range of inpatient, outpatient and wellness services. Specialized services include a Heart and Vascular Center, a Women’s Care Center which houses The BirthPlace and Level II/III Special Care Neonatal Nursery, a fully-accredited Cancer Center, leading-edge Imaging Services, complete Rehabilitation Services, state-of-the-art surgical offerings across numerous specialties including bariatrics, a Wound Healing Center and a network of system-owned physician practices. Satellite facilities include the Mebane Outpatient Center, which features day surgery, urgent care, a satellite Cancer Center and other services located in the Mebane Medical Park; West End Medical Park; Pediatric Rehabilitation; and several outpatient Rehabilitation centers.

CHANGE IS CONSTANT

Alamance Regional is a values-driven organization. We take great pride in the care we provide through not only our system, but also to the community through the support of numerous efforts and agencies. The amount of financial support provided through community benefit efforts tops $37 million annually. Facing the uncertainty of the changing face of healthcare, our board of directors and hospital leadership were charged with developing a plan that would position us for the future, while still allowing us to honor our core values. That charge resulted in a thorough strategic planning process with three key tenants: integration, the patient experience and efficiency. In 2011 we developed a partnership with the Studer Group to help us fulfill several key pieces of this plan.

For nearly two years, we have worked with the Studer Group to create a more accountable culture that has led to a highly engaged workforce and enhanced care for our patients. The Leadership Evaluation Manager (LEM) has been a cornerstone of success for our organization. We have created a measurable set of organizational goals that cascade through leadership at every level. This tool has created an awareness of the organization’s goals and an ownership in each person’s role in achieving measurable results. We call our journey I inspire: excellence starts with me. And we want our employees to feel inspired to do what’s right for each other, our community and our patients.

Many other tools have been implemented that we feel have contributed to our success. Unified standards of behavior, nurse leader rounding, reward and recognition, the monthly meeting model, structured leadership development, thank you notes, staff rounding, and post-visit phone calls have all helped us on our journey. But we’ve always felt that it’s not about the numbers- it’s about the patients and our people. When you’re doing what’s right for the patient, it’s reflected in the numbers. Over the past two years we’ve seen a steady upward trajectory in our HCAHPS scores and other patient satisfaction measures.

INSPIRED BY EXCELLENCE

Our recent successes are evident in the community and across the country. In 2012 we received a full accreditation from the Joint Commission, were named one of the nation’s Most Wired for use of information technology to improve patient care, were recognized as a national innovator for supply chain processes designed to decrease waste and cost, and our Cancer Center received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the American College of Surgeons for our accreditation with seven commendations. We were also named the North Carolina State Public Health Partner of the year and received the Spirit of North Carolina Award from the North Carolina United Way, evidence of our strong belief in supporting our community.

And while every award makes us proud - our patients have also noticed something is different:

“Best experience I have ever had at any hospital.”

“I am an employee who recently had to bring my husband in to the Emergency Department; the care we received was beyond excellent. It feels really great to work at a place you can recommend to everyone.”

“I recently underwent a colonoscopy and wanted to provide my sincere appreciation for all of the staff involved in my care. I received superb care from many different providers, which led to a very positive experience.”

This is some of the most recent feedback we’ve received from patients. And to us, this is what’s most important. While we’ve not yet reached all of our organization’s goals, we’re on the right path to continued results grounded in Studer’s philosophy of making Alamance Regional an even better place for patients to receive care, our employees to work and our physicians to practice medicine.
