Arkansas Surgical Hospital

  • Location: North Little Rock, AR
  • Award: Rural Healthcare Organization of the Month
  • Awarded: November 2012

Arkansas Surgical Hospital is a 51 bed surgical hospital located in central Arkansas with a mission to enhance the quality of life for our patients, physicians, employees and community through safe, high quality, high value care.

Our surgeons' vision was to provide the highest quality of care in a patient-centered hospital setting. When they could not find the answer in existing facilities, they decided to build their own hospital. This gave them the ability to manage their patient's entire healthcare experience, including the highest level of quality and patient satisfaction.

The hospital opened in April 2005 with just a handful of staff, 16 in-patient suites and five operating rooms. In April 2006, the hospital began an expansion that would take Arkansas Surgical Hospital to 51 beds and 9 operating rooms. This allowed the surgeons to care for more of their patients in the highest quality environment.

One way Arkansas Surgical Hospital reaches out to the community is by hosting a "Day of Giving" each year. This is a day of free surgery for patients who would otherwise be unable to receive the surgery they need. These patients are identified by their surgeons as candidates to receive surgery at no cost. The hospital, all related physicians and staff donate one Saturday a year to make this special day happen.

We have consistently received national recognition over the last seven years including: HealthGrades ratings of #1 in Arkansas for Spine & Orthopedic Surgery, as well as CareChex ranking in the top 1% nationally for Spine & Orthopedic care. Both organizations have also recognized us for Patient Satisfaction and Patient Safety.

You might wonder why an organization that was already scoring in the 95 percentile on HCAHPS surveys, would feel a need to partner with the Studer Group to improve outcomes. The answer is that "Good" isn't "Good Enough" for our staff and surgeons. We want to be "Great". As a surgical hospital, we don't try to be everything to everyone; rather we focus our unique skills on specific services, working constantly to provide an exceptional patient experience.

In the 18 months we have partnered with the Studer Group, we have seen our patient satisfaction survey results get even better with the biggest improvement in Responsiveness of Hospital Staff and Communication about Medicines.

Moving from the 95th percentile to 99th percentile is key to becoming "Great". We received the HCAHPS Most Achieved 9 or 10 Rating and the Best Overall – Includes HCAHPS and Core Measurers awards at the 2012 What's Right In Health Care Conference.

AIDET® and Hourly Rounding have changed the way our staff and physicians care for every patient and family member. Through these techniques we have been able to see measurable increases in our overall patient satisfaction scores.

This partnership has provided us with a method to focus on how we treat our patients and each other. On January 1, 2012, we implemented a new house-wide Standards of Behavior policy that has become the expected method of communication within the facility. As internal employee and physician expectations change, we continue our quest from "Good" to "Great". We will continue to improve the way we provide health care to our patients and their families, striving to provide them with an exceptional patient experience every time. Additionally, we want to continue to be the employer of choice within our highly competitive market, and to provide optimum working conditions for the surgeons, nurses and staff who provide their excellent care to our patients.

Yes, we want to continue to receive praise and awards, but we know that on any given day, someone we love could be a patient and we want to make sure we take care of everyone, just like they were our family.
