Carolinas East Medical Center

Carolina East Medical Center located in picturesque New Bern, North Carolina  is a 350 bed, full service facility housing a complete compliment of inpatient and outpatient services. In addition to comfortable medical/surgical areas, the medical center has dedicated units for heart care, critical care, intensive care, women's care, pediatric care, orthopedic care, surgical care and cancer care.

Sophisticated surgical suites featuring the DaVinci Robotic Assisted Surgical System, leading edge diagnostic and therapeutic services provide care for the more than 185,000 patients who trust us with their health care each year. Free standing surgery and diagnostic imaging centers are the region's premier outpatient services providers. Physician practices provide primary and specialty care. At CarolinaEast, over 250 physicians direct a health care team of over 2100 caring professionals and 500+ volunteers dedicated to only your well-being. Knowing the families of Coastal North Carolina have trusted us with their health for nearly 50 years is a true source of pride for us.

Since we first began serving our community in 1962 in the old St. Lukes Hospital, we’ve grown right along with our region. Over the years we’ve added new beds and new technology. Opening as the "ultra modern" 100 bed Craven County Hospital in 1963, the 21st Century CarolinaEast Health System is a 350 bed, multi-facility health care provider to the five county Coastal Carolina Region. Each year, we touch the lives of over 185,000 neighbors.

And, while we may offer the same level of care that is usually found at larger medical centers in much larger cities, we have taken special care over the years to maintain our community feel.  For almost 50 years, the families of coastal North Carolina have trusted us to take care of their most precious commodity - their good health. We look forward to the next five decades and beyond...building on our history of caring and our tradition of progress.

Our Values
We will do what is right...every encounter, every opportunity, every day...no exceptions.

Our Studer Journey:

Our Studer journey in the Emergency Department started in September 2012 and we were ready to get started and make the necessary changes to improve not only our patient’s perception but the overall operations of the emergency department including employee and physician engagement. When we started our patient perception scores were in the 28th percentile and throughput metrics and patients leaving without being seen were above the national benchmarks. Our key strategies for success were:

  • Patient call backs utilizing Patient Call Managerâ„  which we started in September 2012
  • Leader Rounding on Staff and Patients
  • Immediate bedding of patients
  • Leadership development for frontline leadership including charge nurses
  • Bedside Shift Report

Our results:

Patient perception scores are now in 80th percentile.

Reduced door to provider to below 28 minutes.

Reduced left without being seen rate to below 1.5%.

Reduced length of stay for discharged patients by approximately 90 minutes.

We are still learning and growing in our journey and are looking forward our continued improvements. We recently received the Press Ganey award for most improved in patient satisfaction and were also presenters at What’s Right in Health Care® in October. Our goal is “every patient, every encounter, every time, no exceptions”.
