Maryborough District Health Service (MDHS), located across the local government area of Central Goldfields Shire (CGS) and the Pyrenees Shire in Central Victoria, Australia, provides a comprehensive range of services to the population of around 15,000 people. The main campus is located in Maryborough with other campuses in Avoca and Dunolly. MDHS is an award winning, health service dedicated to the provision of health, community, welfare and aged care services and been serving the community since the early twentieth century.

MDHS has embarked on a program of social capital reform, service enhancement and physical infrastructure enhancement operating with a highly prompted mantra of 'Inspiring Health' and has: $38 million budget, 450 staff, three campuses, catchment of 15,000, 92 aged care beds, 32 acute beds, urgent care center, breadth of community and primary health services, full National Accreditation. The demographic of the region includes an ageing population with enormous socio-economic and socio-health disadvantage

MDHS is a recognized and respected as a valued rural partner, their service is driven through their values, their vision which is to “Inspire Health” through the values of genuine, respect, excellence, accountability  and togetherness  (GREAT ) and run a program throughout the health service called “Good to Great” (G2G) for all staff to be a part of and be recognized against each value.

MDHS commenced our partnership with the Studer Group in 2011. They named their program, Good to Great. This program has been embraced by staff and has led to major improvements in employee engagement and well-being.

Over the years of the partnership has moved them from an organization at risk of not meeting safety and quality standards and in financial difficulty to one that is fully accredited against the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards and Aged Care accreditation standards.

The have achieved a significant improvement in staff engagement. Today when one walks into MDHS they are welcomed by volunteers, and walking around any part of MDHS they are welcomed with a smile and “can I help you” approach.

MDHS has achieved greater improvements in patient safety, patient satisfaction and has a waiting list for residential aged care beds, so great is the reputation now in the local community.
