Roper St. Francis Healthcare

  • Location: Charleston, SC
  • Award: Evidence-Based Leadership Healthcare Organization of the Month
  • Awarded: May 2010

Roper St. Francis Healthcare's mission is simple: Healing all people with compassion, faith and excellence.

Known for giving exceptional care with a personal touch, Roper St. Francis Healthcare is the only private, not-for-profit health care system in South Carolina's coastal Lowcountry region. The 657-bed system comprises 90 facilities and services in seven counties. Anchor hospitals are Roper Hospital and Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital, and a new 85 Bed Mt. Pleasant Hospital scheduled open in November of 2010. With more than 4,800 employees, Roper St. Francis is Charleston's largest nongovernmental, private employer.

Roper Hospital was founded in 1850 as the first community hospital in the Carolinas. Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital first opened in 1882 as St. Francis Xavier Infirmary, the first Catholic hospital in South Carolina. In 1998, Roper and Bon Secours St. Francis hospitals came together to form Roper St. Francis Healthcare.

In the fall of 2005, Roper St. Francis Healthcare partnered with the Studer Group. Employees, staff and board members, eagerly embraced the Studer Group's evidence-based leadership model.

The Studer Group strengthened efforts already in place to ensure consistency of care and services. Leadership Development Institutes accelerated the integration of two very different and independent hospital cultures. Our ongoing Journey to Excellence has become ingrained with a common language of the five pillars: People, Quality, Financial, Growth and Service. Following is our record of achievement by Pillar.
