Rose Medical Center

  • Location: Denver, CO
  • Award: Evidence-Based Leadership Healthcare Organization of the Month
  • Awarded: June 2014

Well known as a Denver institution for 65 years, Rose Medical Center has earned a reputation as Denver’s “baby hospital” while also becoming a leader in comprehensive women’s services, internal medicine, endoscopy, heart and vascular care, orthopedics and joint replacement, bariatric surgery, sports medicine and aesthetic surgery. Rose is a licensed 422-bed acute care hospital centrally located in Denver, Colo., with 1,300 employees, 1,200 affiliated physicians and more than 100 committed volunteers.

Rose was founded in 1945 by a group of Jewish physicians because at that time, Jewish physicians weren’t allowed to practice at other hospitals in Denver. These “nine wise men” had a vision to “serve the need of every creed.” After opening in 1949, Rose became the first hospital in Denver not only to allow Jewish physicians to practice medicine, but it was also the first hospital in Denver to have an African American physician and a female physician on its medical staff.  With these origins in Jewish teachings, traditions and community, Rose’s core values have emerged and developed.

Most recently, Rose has described its vision to be “insanely great for every person, every time.” This vision, first shared by Rose’s CEO Kenneth Feiler, has taken shape in many ways throughout the daily work at Rose and drives the leaders, employees and physicians to redefine their expectations for what truly great care and service looks like.

Rose is part of HealthONE, which is a family of hospitals in Denver that are part of the Continental Division of HCA. HealthONE began its “Culture of Excellence” commitment with the Studer Group in January 2013.

At Rose, the practices recommended by the Studer Group paired perfectly with the quest to be “insanely great.” The evidence-based practices being hardwired that resulted in improved outcomes:

  • Nurse leader rounding
  • Employee rounding
  • Physician rounding
  • Internal customer rounding
  • AIDET that is practiced with each patient
  • Scheduled supervisory monthly meetings with all leaders to monitor progress towards organizational goals and improved communication
  • Quarterly Leadership Development Institutes with the other HealthONE hospitals for professional growth and development
  • Thank you notes to employees and physicians
  • Employee rewards and recognition, managed by an employee-led team
  • Post-discharge clinical calls
