Rutland Regional Medical Center

  • Location: Rutland, Vermont
  • Award: Studer Group Healthcare Organization of the Month
  • Awarded: June 2017

Since it was established in 1896, Rutland Regional Medical Center has prospered into Vermont’s largest community hospital and largest employer in the Rutland region. This 133 licensed bed facility serves over 250,000 patients annually with a dedicated and expert medical staff of 290 plus 1600 additional personnel. Currently, Rutland Regional has 37 specialty clinics addressing a wide breadth of health issues including cancer, heart, orthopaedics, women’s health, diabetes, and addiction/recovery. They aspire to be “the Best Community Healthcare System in New England,” with a mission “to improve the health of the Rutland Region and surrounding communities by providing appropriate, superior, integrated, preventative, diagnostic, and therapeutic health services in a caring environment through the strength of our people, technology, and relationships.”

Rutland Regional continues to meet the changing demands of healthcare by offering patients access to sophisticated equipment technologies, and highly trained, skilled physicians and staff with a patient-centered approach. The focus of Rutland Regional is to not only help patients get better, but also support them in staying healthy. Healthier communities equate to a stronger, more engaged workforce resulting in a more robust economy. Rutland Regional has taken proactive steps to sponsor a variety of either free or low cost community wide events, classes and workshops geared towards expanding one’s knowledge of particular health topics like weight loss, nutrition, tobacco cessation, and heart health.

By employing the principals of the Studer Group, Rutland Regional has set forth on a pathway of
greater transparency, accountability, and better outcomes for the organization which has translated into increased favorable satisfaction rates from patients. To illustrate, over the past year the Emergency Department has undergone an extensive multi-month expansion and renovation project spanning much of 2016 into early 2017. Through the various stages of physical disarray, and while the ED was operating at maximum capacity, they still experienced a customer satisfaction rate of 94%.  Also, beginning in June 2016, as part of their commitment to healthy living, Rutland Regional became 100% Tobacco-Free, meaning no tobacco use of any kind is permitted inside or outside on our main campus or off- site locations. The Studer tools were used for the development of the plan that included administering surveys, gathering input, addressing objections, and then successfully rolling out the program.

Over the past two years Rutland Regional has received 17 awards and recognitions that support our unwavering commitment to being the best community healthcare system in New England. Rutland Regional was the recipient of five Healthgrades Specialty Excellence Awards, including Five-Star Recipient for Total Knee Replacement-2017, and Five-Star Recipient for Gallbladder Surgery-2017. Rutland Regional was the only hospital in Vermont to be rated Five-Stars in Gallbladder removal surgery.

We are proud to be named among the nation’s best hospitals in the US News & World Report Best Hospitals for Common Care. More recently (2016-2017) Rutland Regional was rated as High Performing in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart failure and hip replacement. In the fall of 2016, we received our most recent “A” rating for hospital safety from the Leapfrog Group. We have also been recognized for patient information access (Most Wired, 2016), workplace transformation (The Advisory Board 2016) and in maternity care (Blue Distinction Maternity 2016) and positive outcomes for rehabilitation services (FOTO Outcomes Excellence 2016).

In addition to being a major economic driver in the region, Rutland Regional gives back to the community in number of ways like its involvement with a program “Healthy Home Pilot”. The hospital partners with a local housing organization to provide funds to support home renovations and upgrades for patients with respiratory illnesses brought on by exposure to molds, poor air quality, and cold drafts. Another example is the 802Go! Family Fun in the Great Outdoors initiative. This is a year-round collaboration with area businesses to host outdoor events on the hospital campus. These events are designed to encourage our community to get outside and play!

The employees of Rutland Regional Medical Center truly believe that taking care of the people in the Rutland Region is a privilege and they do so while adhering to their brand promise: to listen, to respect and to care…always.
