Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre

  • Location: Sioux Lookout, ON
  • Award: Canadian Healthcare Organization of Distinction
  • Awarded: July 2018

At Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre (SLMHC) our mission is “Caring for People, Embracing Diversity, and Respecting Different Pathways to Health” and with over 450 employees we have committed to ensuring that the people we serve, their families and caregivers, as well as the community has a voice in how we meet that mission.

The provision of care and service that reflects “Excellence Every Time” supports our vision of becoming a Centre of Excellence in First Nations and northern healthcare by working together to improve the health status of individuals, families and communities now and for generations to come.

In the fall of 2017, SLMHC earned Exemplary Standing.  As a small, rural 60-bed acute care hospital and 20-bed extended care facility, we provide health services to approximately 30,000 residents within Sioux Lookout and the surrounding area.  MenoYaWin in the Anishinaabe language means health, wellness and well-being.  It refers to holistic healing and wellness, the whole self-being in a state of complete wellness.  With this in mind and a specific focus on understanding the history and culture of the people we serve, Meno Ya Win staff and physicians, with support from our Traditional Healing program, have placed priority on culture within the healthcare experience.

Since beginning our journey with Studer Group in 2016, our focus on the experience of our patients and residents has resulted in elevated and sustained performance specific to our survey question, “Did the hospital staff take my cultural values and those of my family or caregiver into account?”  This focus will be maintained as we move into 2018/19, demonstrating our commitment to health, wellness, and well-being now and for generations to come.
