TriStar Horizon Medical Center

  • Location: Dickson, TN
  • Award: Emergency Department of the Quarter
  • Awarded: April 2016

TriStar Horizon Medical Center is a fully accredited, 157-bed facility located 40 miles west of Nashville, Tennessee and serves an expanded region in Western Middle Tennessee. TriStar Horizon is part of HCA’s TriStar Nashville market, which includes an integrated network of 11 hospitals, surgery centers, urgent care centers, and an extensive physician network.

TriStar Horizon boasts a long list of quality and clinical accolades, including recognition by Joint Commission as a top performer for three consecutive years. The facility was most recently awarded the HCA Unit of Distinction Excellence in Medical-Surgical Nursing Award for performing in the top 5% of the company for exemplary nursing performance in leadership, clinical practice and continuous improvement. The facility maintains excellence and Joint Commission accreditation as a primary stroke center, chest pain center, certified inpatient rehabilitation center, and is currently pursuing designation as a Level III trauma center.

While TriStar Horizon’s clinical services and quality accolades are many, the facility is best known for its reputation as the gold standard for culture in HCA. TriStar Horizon maintains the highest employment engagement score amongst all HCA medical/surgical facilities and consistently leads the division with low turnover. The culture, developed over many years, reflects a true commitment to the patient, the community, and the team.

TriStar Horizon maintains two emergency departments, the main campus (26 beds) as well as a satellite emergency department (8 beds) that opened in June 2015 on a campus that will likely one day serve as the hospital’s main campus.

The Studer journey began in 2015 and coincided with several obstacles, including the opening of the satellite emergency department, multiple staff and leadership transitions (many related to the new ED), complete renovation of the main campus ED, and surging volume (+23% vs. Prior Year). Despite the significant headwinds, the complete alignment between ED nursing leadership, ED physician leadership, and administration resulted in significant progress for our patients. The hardwiring of Studer tactics, specifically ED leader rounding on patients, ED huddle, and the ED MOR started to transform the patients’ experience and led to tremendous results. Additionally, the focus on the front end processes included an enhanced greeter process and immediate bedding for all patients was hardwired in the ED.

Most importantly, the TriStar Horizon team has recognized that improvements in teamwork, efficiency, and hardwiring have directly impacted the care our patients are receiving.
